FAQs

What is my mellow bio case made of?
mellow bio cases are made of a resin derived from compostable bioplastics. Bioplastics are produced from renewable biomass sources (AKA: plant-based materials like corn starch). They are fully compostable and can be entirely decomposed by microorganisms.

Is mellow packaging eco-friendly?
It sure is! Our packaging is made of recycled materials and is also recyclable.

Will my case decompose while I'm using it?
The mellow bio case is designed to protect your phone while you use it and to naturally degrade given the right conditions. Like other compostable or biodegradable materials, the case requires the right amount of air, moisture, sunlight, heat, and microorganisms to break down. Therefore, your case will never decompose while in use, even if left in a deep, dark drawer.

How do I dispose of my case?
Bioplastics biodegrade or decompose into their natural elements thanks to the work of bacteria and enzymes. Because the mellow bio case meets biodegradability standards of both industrial composting facilities and backyard composters, you can choose either of these options.

We recommend checking in with your city before disposing of your case, as not all municipalities accept bioplastics for compost. If you live in one of these areas and don't have access to a backyard composter, no worries. Send us your case, and we'll be happy to dispose of it for you!

Can water damage my mellow bio case?
Water will do absolutely no harm to your case!

How do I clean my case?
Soapy water will do the trick.

How long will it take for my mellow bio case to break down?
It all depends on the conditions your case is exposed to. If you have your own composting system at home, decomposing times will vary depending on its size, contents, moisture levels, temperature, and how you tend to it. The whole process ranges from 6 months to 2 years – the same amount of time it takes for all materials to degrade in a backyard composter.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Ensure that your pile is moist at all times and that it's kept at a high-enough temperature (120°F-170°F).
  • Make sure that it’s rich in nitrogen and carbon, as these elements help speed up decomposition.
  • Cut your case into pieces before disposing of it, as smaller items tend to break down faster than larger ones.

What's the warranty on my mellow bio case?
Our 2-Year Limited Warranty applies to all mellow products. When purchased directly from mellow, or through an authorized retailer, our products are warranted to be free from defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for 2 years following purchase.

 What isn't covered?

  • Use of the product other than for its intended purpose

Exchanges (if applicable)
We replace items only if they are deemed defective or damaged. If you need to exchange your case, you may do so for the same model by sending an email to support@mymellow.ca.

Will the case protect my phone?
Cracked screens, chipped metal frames, and scratches are common problems faced by all smartphone users. Accidents happen, and when they do, we either grudgingly live with our damaged phones or buy new ones. To help prevent such accidents and reduce the amount of toxic waste generated by mobile device and accessory production, we produced the world's first drop-tested compostable case.

After conducting extensive drop testing experiments, including numerous 6-foot falls onto concrete. The mellow bio case's reinforced corners, air pockets, and raised bezel ensure every inch of your phone is protected.

How does my mellow bio case contribute to the fight against plastic pollution?
We've spent many years working in the consumer electronics and tech industries and have seen far too much go to waste, especially in the mobile accessory sector. Consider how quickly new mobile products hit the market. When we upgrade or replace our phones, we often throw out our old cases and buy new ones. Sometimes we replace old phone cases simply to freshen up our look. Now, think of all the smartphone users worldwide that do the same thing. That makes for a lot of waste! We set out to remove ourselves from this waste cycle and, instead, develop a solution that would reduce our plastic footprint through the selection of smarter production materials. The end result? Anyone who purchases a mellow bio case helps prevent additional harmful plastics from entering our oceans and landfills. We think that's pretty awesome.

What's more, we're kicking off new initiatives to recuperate and recycle used and unsold plastic phone cases. By upcycling them and giving them a new life, these cases don't end up in landfills; where it would take thousands of years for them to break down while releasing toxic elements into the environment.

Finally, we believe that when it comes to preserving our planet, our best bet is to educate future generations. This is why mellow donates 1% of its sales to Plastic Oceans Canada, a non-profit environmental organization whose goal is to build awareness about our environmental situation and foster tangible solutions through educational programs.
